In Memory of Dmitrii Trubetskov

After a long illness there passed away Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation, a winner of the Presidential Award in Education, Honourary Citizen of Saratov, an owner of the terminal degree in physics and mathematics, Professor, Chair of the SSU Department of Electronics, Vibrations, and Waves Dmitrii Trubetskov.

Dmitrii Trubetskov was born on June 14, 1938, in Saratov. He was brought up in the family of his grandfather and grandmother on his mother’s side. In 1955 he graduated with a gold medal from the school for boys №19 and entered Faculty of Physics. Since then his life was associated with Saratov State University. He graduated from the university with honours in 1960, in the same year he entered the postgraduate course and wrote his thesis under Professor Vladimir Shevchik’s supervision, in 1965 Dmitrii Trubetskov defended his PhD, and in 1978 – his doctoral dissertation. Since 1961 he consistently worked at the Department of Electronics (later on the Department of Electronics, Vibrations), Saratov State University, as Assistant, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor. From 1981 to the present he was Chair of this department. In 1991 he was elected as Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. From 1994 to 2003 Dmitrii Trubetskov worked as Rector of Saratov State University. The professor was awarded with the Order of the Badge of Honour and the Medal for the Development of Virgin Lands.

Dmitrii Trubetskov was a prominent scientist in microwave electronics, radiophysics and nonlinear dynamics, the founder of a research school for the theoretical and experimental study of nonlinear and nonstationary phenomena and patterns of complex dynamics, including dynamic chaos and the formation of structures, in various self-oscillating distributed and lumped systems, including radiophysical ones, in ecology, biology, medicine, and social sciences models. Also he was the author of more than 300 research papers, 26 monographies and textbooks, which have been reprinted several times, including in English and Spanish. Besides, the professor wrote books and articles on the history of nonlinear science.

For many years Dmitrii Trubetskov supervised research and pedagogy work at the Department of Electronics, the Faculty of Physics, now the Department of Electronics, Vibrations, and Waves, Saratov State University, the only Faculty of Nonlinear Processes in Russia, and also he lectured on the modern theory of oscillations and waves at National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. In addition, he was one of the founders of the Lyceum of Applied Sciences, where the syllabi were based on nonlinear dynamics.

Dmitrii Trubetskov rectored Saratov State University for nine years, he was a member of the board of the Russian Union of Rectors, he was Deputy Chair of the Council of Rectors of the Volga Federal District and Chair of the Council of Rectors of Saratov Region. He was the scientific supervisor of 10 doctors and 38 candidates of sciences.

Dmitrii Trubetskov worked as a rector in the 1990s, the difficult times. Then the rector had to "earn" salaries for the employees and scholarships for the students. The university administration had to make lots of efforts to get any funding. Thanks to the rector the university continued to work, international relations developed, research broadened, new research and education structures were established. Thus, during his tenure as SSU Rector there were founded the Faculty of Computer Sciences, the Faculty of Sociology, and the Faculty of Philosophy as well as the Department of Law, which marked the foundation of the Faculty of Law. Supported by Vyacheslav Volodin Bldg. 10 was built.

Dmitrii Trubetskov was one of the founders of the All-Russian research and technology journal titled Izvestiya VUZ. Applied Nonlinear Dynamics, he was Deputy Editor-in-chief of this journal. The professor was a member of the editorial board of the journal titled Izvestiya VUZ - Radiophysics and the Research Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences titled High-Current Relativistic Electronics and Charged Particle Beams. He organised and regularly hosted International Schools in Microwave Electronics and Radiophysics, CHAOS International Schools (Chaotic Self-Oscillations and Formation of Structures) as well as annual schools titled Nonlinear Days in Saratov for Youth aimed at schoolchildren and students.

Dmitrii Trubetskov was devoted to the university, its staff, and students. For the university staff members he was a friend, a mentor, and a person who loved the university dearly.

He was an excellent orator and not only knew and loved Russian poetry well but wrote poetry himself. Delivering reports he cited the poetic lines of his favorite poets as a weighty argument. Dmitrii Trubetskov was a prominent Russian scientist, lecturer, pedagogue, and Teacher. He will remain in our memory as an example of a Russian intellectual who cared about the fate of the country, his alma mater, and higher education. The memory of Dmitrii Trubetskov will always remain with everyone who cares about Saratov University.

We express our deep condolences to the family and friends of Dmitrii Trubetskov. The lying in state ceremony will take place on August 14 at 11.30 in the assembly hall of SSU Bldg. 10 (on the corner of Moskovskaya and Astrakhanskaya Streets).
