This week, Saratov University begins to produce FFP1 and FFP2 mask respirators. At the moment we are going to release 20 thousand units but we also plan to produce from 200 to 300 thousand masks per month.

The technology for the pilot industrial production of rolled nonwoven fabric was developed by the SSU Perspective Materials Innovation Centre. The protective equipment will be distributed in accordance with the orders of the Government of Saratov Region.

It should be noted that the new generation material used in the manufacture of respirators has unique properties, e.g. an ultra-small fiber diameter of 70 nanometers and a unique ability to filter highly dispersed aerosols in the air, including those containing viruses and bacteria. Such a material is capable of providing a highly effective delay of the most elusive particles sized 0.3-0.4 microns due to the ultra-small pore size.

According to SSU President, the project’s supervisor Leonid Yu. Kossovich, the IC laboratory that develops the technology for vital production is equipped with the advanced technology. The work of the Innovation Centre of Saratov University is supported by Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects.

‘The output of respirators made from the new generation materials is a unique experience for our region. The high-tech protective equipment will be really effective in virus response, and this is especially important in the current situation,’ Leonid Kossovich added.
