On April 26, World Intellectual Property (IP) Day is celebrated. This year, its theme is Women and IP – a Catalyst for Innovation and Creativity. In honour of the holiday on April 27, there the staff of the SSU Boiling Point will hold Female Scientists, Inventors of Saratov Region forum. Employees of Saratov universities and enterprises will speak at the event. They will present their projects and share invaluable experience in the development and implementation innovations. Female inventors of the university are to present their scientific achievements. The forum will start at 2 p.m.

Any results of scientific and creative activity can be secured by patenting. The Patent Services Centre protects the intellectual property of researchers at Saratov State University.

The main task of the PSC is to form a portfolio of intellectual property. The Patent Services Centre helps scientists patent their inventions, utility models, industrial designs, as well as register trademarks, computer programmes, and databases. In addition, the PSC employees provide legal regulation between authors and employers, assess and examine the value of intellectual property, protect the rights and interests of authors and patent holders in the patent office, and conduct lectures and seminars on the protection of IP rights.

Saratov State University scientists patent at least 30 inventions and utility models per year. In seven years (2016-2022), 484 patents were obtained: for 124 inventions, 34 utility models, 295 computer programmes, 23 database programmes, 7 breeding achievements, and 1 industrial design. In 2023, 77 intellectual property objects have been patented.

‘Working on obtaining monopoly rights, we, together with the authors, evaluate the novelty and level of research results, choose a strategy for legal protection, and draw up the necessary set of documents. This is far from a formal work of craftsmen, it is necessary to catch the author's idea, correctly form the questions in order to write a “portrait of the invention” that determines the scope of legal protection,’ Head of the PSC Natalia Romanova.

According to her, SSU scientists most often create inventions in physics, measuring technology, medicine, and chemistry. Popular studies are connected with animal behaviour research, inventions in targeted drug delivery, and cancer control using nanoparticles.

‘The SSU inventions belong to the most diverse industries. For example, patents have been obtained for a protective mask with a UV irradiator, a method for treating stomatitis, a method for hydrocarbon deposits searching, a microwave logic element of ternary transistor-transistor logic, methods of optical illumination, a biostimulator of plant growth, a method for growing wild cherry, a method for hardening and a steel surface. A new Cherry Drop Gladiolus variety and six varieties of corn have been registered,’ Natalia Romanova noted.

One of the most advanced inventions over the past year has been the cap for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, developed by SSU scientists under the leadership of Chief Researcher of the Smart Sleep Laboratory Oksana Semyachkina-Glushkovskaya. The cap is based on stimulation of the cleansing function of the lymphatic system of the brain. The device intended for usage at home will go on sale this year.

The Technologies and Innovations Support Centre has been established at the PSC to provide consultation to inventors of the city for free. The centre occupies the 10th place among 182 Russian TISCs.
