The news about the strongest earthquake in Turkey in the last 84 years has spread all over the world. Thousands of people were killed in a series of 7.8-magnitude tremors.

The Chair of the Department of General Geology and Minerals, Professor of Saratov State University Andrei Guzhikov in an interview, which was published in the Research City section, explained the causes and effects of earthquakes in February 2023 in Turkey and commented whether it was possible to predict seismicity.

Andrei Guzhikov said about the connection of earthquakes in Turkey with aftershocks in Sochi, in the Kuril Islands, and in the Arctic. Reading the interview, you can find out whether the echoes of the earthquake threaten Russia and how to behave in its epicentre.

‘When they say that the Arabian plate has shifted relatively to the Anatolian plate by 3 meters, it is more correct to say that there have been movements of individual large blocks. Of course, there has been a major shift, and a displacement of 3 meters is actually recorded in this place. But it is too early to say that now the entire tectonic plate has shifted by 3 meters,’ Andrei Guzhikov commented.
