Today, January 13, marks the Day of the Russian Press. The date of the holiday was chosen for a reason: 320 years ago, on January 2, 1703 (January 13, the new style), the first issue of the Russian printed newspaper, The Vedomosti, was published. It was founded by decree of Peter I in December 1702.

Traditionally, this day is celebrated not only by those who are engaged in the production of printed products, but also by everyone who is somehow connected with journalism.

A facsimile edition of the very first issue of Peter newspaper is kept in the Regional Scientific Library named after V.A. Artisevich, SSU. The Vedomosti contained rich material about the Russian military history in the first quarter of the 18th century, its international relations, the development of manufacturing, trade, and education. Issues of The Vedomosti were available for sale, unlike the predecessor of this newspaper – the handwritten Chimes, compiled for the tsar and his coterie. Peter I took a significant part in the editing of The Vedomosti and their preparation for publication.

The Manuscripts and Rare Books Division of the library has pre-revolutionary issues of The St. Petersburg Vedomosti and The Moscow Vedomosti. Regional journalism is represented by the publications of the Saratov Provincial Vedomosti, which in January this year celebrates the 185th anniversary from the date of the first issue, The Saratov Diocesan Vedomosti, and The Saratov Reference Sheet. In the library collections there are other publications of the 18th and the 19th centuries. In the Periodicals Division, readers can read newspapers and magazines of the 20th and the 21st centuries.

Of course, the library also has the archive of the university print media. The Saratov University newspaper has a great and rich history, the name of which has changed several times over the years. Its first issue can be considered the issue of the For Proletarians newspaper dated March 18, 1930. Later on, the newspaper was called For Researchers (1934-1935), The Stalinist (1936-1957), and The Lenin's Way (1957-1991).

Since October 24, 1991, the newspaper has been published under the name The Saratov University. It is focused on the university community and enrollees, commenting on the university news, how students and professors of all the faculties, the institutes, and colleges live.

Traditionally, the Day of SSU Press is celebrated by professors and students of the Institute of Philology and Journalism, university editorial teams, publishing houses, and printing houses, as well as the staff of the Office of Media Communications. Journalists of the university publish the Saratov University newspaper and the Sweet Milk student magazine, actively write about the university in the SSU official accounts in social networks, in the news feed, and other information sections on the SSU official website.

The celebration is also joined by the creative teams of the Laboratory of Mass Media, the SSU Film Studio, the I Like It youth television project, the teaching staff of the Institute of Philology and Journalism, one way or another connected with the work of modern media and its research – Valerii Prozorov, Elena Yelina, Igor Knigin, Artyom Zorin, Kirill Zakharov, Lyudmila Borisova, Alexandra Rayeva, Irina Bibina, Andrei Bolkunov, Svetlana Artemenko, Tatyana Volokonskaya, Andrei Suvorov, Kirill Rozanov, Julia Anikeyeva, Roman Pavlenko, and others.

In the Year of the Teacher and Mentor, the Government of Saratov Region chose Saratov University, the alma mater of most regional journalists, as a venue for celebrating the Day of Russian Press. The distinguished representatives of the profession who showed great results last year will be awarded at a solemn ceremony by the Governor of the region Roman Busargin.

The celebration will take place at 11 a.m. in Room 208, Bldg. 11. The ceremony will be broadcast online on the VKontakte page of the Ministry of Information and Mass Communications of the region.
