Research and Practice Seminar in SSU on the Threshold of World Intellectual Property Day

On April, 24 SSU Bldg. X hosted a seminar dedicated to World Intellectual Property Day. It gathered patent services specialists and inventors from universities and research centers. The event presidium consisted of Head of the Office of Scientific Work O.I. Moskalenko, Head of the Office of Innovations A.Yu. Tikhonova, Director of the Patent Services Center N.V. Romanova, and Director of the Technologies and Innovations Support Center Ye.A. Saldina.

A.Yu. Tikhonova commented innovation importance is marked due to World Intellectual Property Day and wished the audience to work productively. O.I. Moskalenko also pointed out researchers get grants in case they apply for a patent, which leads to the development of science. She added that when researchers receive patents on their inventions, it underlines the practical aspect of their scientific inquiries conducted within government order programs of the Ministry of Education and Science. Olga Igorevna wished the seminar members to be successful, too.

This year World Intellectual Property Day was devoted to innovative and intellectual activity of women. An engineer of PatentVolgaService LLC. V.O. Fifarova presented her speech on previous topics of the holiday and paid the attention to modern issues related to women’s research and inventiveness. Also she gave examples of successful inventions done by women (kevlar, astrolabe, Wi-Fi, etc.) and spoke about successful SSU female inventors and patent-holders – Chair of the Department of Polymers A.B. Shipovskaya, Associate Professor of the Department of Material Sciences and Technologies and Quality Management S.V. Stetsyura, Chair of the Department of Petrochemistry and Technogenic Safety R.I. Kuzmina, and Professor of the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Ecology, and others.

N.V. Romanova focused on changes in patent law system and its usage. Thus, new standardized documents have been introduced regulating patent application and its pendency procedures and the list of patent requirements has been extended. N.V. Romanova said the fee patent expenditures have increased, however, a number of applicants, including universities, have some benefits. Besides, the speaker noted the law balance between patent-holders and society has been found, the patent legislation has been harmonized, and incorrect development descriptions have been controlled. Nataliya Viktorovna commented on legislative definitions of such concepts as invention, utility model, and production unit and discussed a few cases with the audience.

A Patent Attorney of Russia Ye.U. Astakhova delivered a report on technical patenting in Russia and the USA observing three types of American patents – on utility models, design, and selection inventions. Moreover, she provided the information on patent application procedure and denoted possible patent savings in the U.S.

After that SSU female researchers told the seminar participants about their inventions. S.V. Stetsyura shared the story of her scientific interests and highlighted the significance of inventive activity in research development.

A.B. Shipovskaya demonstrated unique chitosan-based products with high wound healing, antiseptic, and moistening properties which can be used by dentistry, dermatology, traumatology, and cosmetology.

Chair of the Department of Human and Animal Physiology O.V. Semyachkina-Glushkovskaya commented on glioma treatment and brain drug delivery patents and presented interim results of her research and its evaluation by international scientific groups.

At the end of the seminar N.V. Romanova thanked the colleagues for their input and wished them to work productively. The seminar devoted to World Intellectual Property Day is a traditional event, and then the results of the School Content “School Patent – Step into the Future” were announced and a set of master-classes were organized.
