Igor Meglinski Elected SPIE Fellow

BELLINGHAM, WA, USA — 3 February 2014 -- SPIE will promote 76 new Fellows of the Society this year, to recognize the significant scientific and technical contributions of each in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. SPIE Fellows are honored for their technical achievements and for their service to the general optics community and to SPIE in particular. More than 1,000 SPIE members have become Fellows since the Society’s inception in 1955. The annual recognition of Fellows provides an opportunity for SPIE to acknowledge Members for their outstanding technical contributions and service to SPIE.

Igor Meglinski, University of Otago, New Zealand, for achievements in biomedical optics and biophotonics. Meglinski has contributed significantly to the field of biomedical optics and biophotonics. He pioneered the application of Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy (DWS) to the non-invasive monitoring of skin blood flow and introduced new optical multi-sensor for bio-medical diagnostics. He developed an approach for real-time non-invasive measurements of blood microcirculation in vivo and actively contributed to the development of novel multi-modal based imaging approach for applications in vascular biology, brain and tumor studies. He also pioneered the application of circularly and elliptically polarized light for non-invasive cancer diagnosis, by tracking Stokes vector of scattered polarized light on the Poincaré sphere, and suggested the use of color coded Poincaré sphere as a graphical tool for tissue characterization. In addition, he generalized a Monte Carlo model of photon migration which found a widespread application as a free online tool for the needs of biophotonics and biomedical optics community, including assessment of the detector depthsensitivity (sampling volume) and fluence rates distribution for a range of probes, imitation of reflectance and transmitted spectra of human skin and skin color, optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans and images, laser pulses and image transfer, modeling of coherent effects of multiple scattering of light, fluorescence spectra and other.

A prolific scientific author, Meglinski is the author and co-author of over 190 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and proceedings of international conferences, several book chapters, and two patents. He has given 140 invited and keynote presentations, and his research has been recognized with many awards and honors. He has also served the optical community as an editor and technical reviewer for journals and granting agencies. He has provided his leadership as session chair and program committee member at major international scientific conferences in the field.

Meglinski has served the SPIE community as a member of program committees, session chair, and conference chair. He has given over 250 presentations at the major international SPIE conferences and published over 70 papers in SPIE journals and conference proceedings. He has also been an editor of SPIE conference proceedings and served as an SPIE traveling lecture and SPIE student chapter advisor.

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. The Society serves more than 235,000 constituents from approximately 155 countries, offering conferences, continuing education, books, journals, and a digital library in support of interdisciplinary information exchange, professional growth, and patent precedent. SPIE provided $3.2 million in support of education and outreach programs in 2013.
