The Department today 

Department of Philosophy of Saratov State University offers to high school and post-secondary education graduates an opportunity to try their hand in the humanitarian sphere. All lovers of wisdom, admirers of cultural and religious values are invited to specialties “Philosophy”, “Cultural Studies”, “Religion Studies”. 
Those, who apply to study full-time, will be invited to take an entrance examination in the form of tests in the following subjects: Russian, History of Russia, Social Studies. 
In both divisions of the Department, the lectures on History of Philosophy, History of World Culture, Antropology, Foreign Languages (including ancient languages), Theory of Literature and other Liberal Arts, Sociology, Political Studies and Media culture are delivered. Also, practical and theoretical classes of computer science are held at the summer schools. The students of the Department of Philosophy have an opportunity to get acquainted with a broad sphere of philosophical disciplines- Systematic Philosophy, Social Philosophy, Philosophical Anthropology, Ethics, Esthetics, etc. We will be glad to see you among our enrollees and wish you luck in your choice of a professional discipline. 
 

History of the Department 

Roots of philosophical education in Saratov go back to 1917. At this period of time, the famous Russian philosopher S.L. Frank carried out scientific and teaching work here. Further development of philosophical education in Saratov is connected with reconstruction of the Chair of Philosophy in 1946 in Saratov State University, which later on became the nucleus of the future school of Saratov philosophers. 
The following academics chaired the department: Doctor of History S.V. Nikolayev (1945-1956), Doctor of Philosophy A.I. Ivanov (1956-1964), Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor О.S. Zelkina (1964-1968), Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Ya. F. Askin (1968-1985), Doctor of Philosophy, Professor V.B. Ustyantsev (1985-1990). In 1990 two university chairs were formed on the basis of the Chair of Philosophy- Chair of Philosophy for Humanities and for Sciences. Chair of Philosophy for Sciences was appointed Doctor of Philosophy, Professor S.P. Pozdneva . In 2001 on the basis of the Chair of Philosophy for Humanities two chairs were organized- the Chair of Theoretical and Social Philosophy, led by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor V.B. Ustyantsev and Chair of Philosophy of Culture and Cultural Studies, led by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor V.N. Belov. In 2003 the Chair of Philosophy for Sciences was renamed Chair of Philosophy and Methodology of Science. 
In 1992 Philosophical division was opened in Saratov State University, first, at the Philological Department, then at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. Thus, preparation of specialists in Philosophy began, and in 1997 the division of “Cultural Studies” was opened. 
Since April 2000 the Department of Philosophy became a separate structural unit of Saratov State University. The Department was chaired by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor B.I. Mokin. Since September 2003 Professor V.N. Belov was electedthe as Dean of the Department of Philosophy. In February 2010 the new Dean was elected. Nowadays, Doctor of Philosophy Professor Orlov Mihail heads Department of Philosophy.
